For most kids, back to school is a time for new clothes and new friends. But for Canadian children at risk of hunger, it also marks the return of wondering when your next lunch will be. That’s right, in a country believed to be one of the most prosperous in the world, there are children who have spent their summer facing food insecurity without the consistent support of school meals.

President’s Choice Children’s Charity continues to be Canada’s largest charitable provider of school meals through its new Power Full Kids™ program, but also aims to ensure children are well-fed all summer. In addition, Power Full Kids™ pairs daily meals and snacks with food skills education, which teaches kids how to grow and cook food. When students develop food skills, they may be better equipped to make good food choices.

The priority of President’s Choice Children’s Charity is to lift the burden created by hunger so kids can focus on their schoolwork. In Canada, more than one million children are at risk of hunger, or one in every six. Hungry kids experience more anxiety, miss more school, and disrupt class more often. “Hunger should never stand in the way of our children’s dreams for their future.” says Lisa Battistelli, the Executive Director of President’s Choice Children’s Charity, “we’re very grateful to the PC Financial® team for helping us get the word out about our new mission: to feed one million kids every year.”

Feeding one million children annually requires a collective effort. Loblaw Companies Ltd. started President’s Choice Children’s Charity in 1989 and along with its customers, colleagues, and vendors, continues to play a foundational role in being able to reach so many children nationally.

That’s why we’ve launched the Million Hungry Minds campaign where customers at Loblaw banner stores can donate at checkout or purchase specially marked products with a portion of the proceeds supporting the President’s Choice Children’s Charity mission to feed hungry kids. “Most exciting,” says Lisa Battistelli, “is the sale of the charity’s first branded grocery tote. Our friends at Loblaw are donating 100% of the proceeds from the sale of every tote to help us feed one million kids.”

The Million Hungry Minds Campaign runs from September 8 to October 2. Join the movement by donating at checkout or by purchasing specially marked products, including the limited-edition charity branded tote at your neighbourhood Loblaw banner store.
