Stay Alert: Your Guide to Outsmarting Modern Scams

Key Points
Watch for common scams like impersonation calls, phishing links, and fake investment offers
PC Financial® will never ask for your full password, PIN, your credit card's 3-digit security code (CVV) or one-time verification codes
If something seems suspicious, use the 3-step defense: Stop. Verify. Protect.
If you suspect fraud, call the number on the back of your card immediately
At PC Financial®, our goal is to keep your banking experience as simple and rewarding as possible. In today's digital world, a big part of keeping things simple is keeping them secure.
Think of this as your playbook for outsmarting modern scam artists. It’s not a list of things to fear; it’s a set of smart habits that empower you to spot fraud with ease. Let’s walk through what to look for, so you can focus on what matters – managing your money, your way.
What to watch for: The "urgent problem" call
It often starts with an unexpected call or text. The display might even say "PC Financial", as scammers can fake caller ID information to impersonate our official phone number. The person on the other end sounds professional, but there's a problem – a "suspicious transaction" or a "compromised account” – and they need you to act now.
This sense of urgency is their most powerful tool. Their goal is to rush you into acting without thinking.
Red Flags:
They contact you unexpectedly about a problem with your account
They pressure you to act immediately, threatening that your account will be frozen
They ask you to transfer money to a "safe" account to "protect it."
They give unusual instructions, like installing software or leaving your card in a mailbox
What to watch for: The "verify your account" message
This is the scammer's favourite way to get your login details. It arrives as an email or text message with a link, creating a false emergency like, "Your account has been suspended, click to reactivate" or "We've detected a suspicious login, verify your identity now".
The link leads to a fake website designed to look exactly like the real PC Financial® site. When you enter your username and password, you’re handing it directly to them.
Red Flags:
Generic greetings like "Dear valued customer"
Spelling mistakes or unprofessional grammar
A link that, when you hover over it, doesn't match our official website address
A request to click a link to "verify" your account
What to watch for: "Too good to be true" offers
These scams prey on the desire to make money quickly. You'll see ads on social media or get messages about "exclusive" or "guaranteed" investment opportunities with unusually high, risk-free returns. They will pressure you to invest immediately to avoid "missing out" and often demand payment via cryptocurrency or wire transfer—methods that are difficult to trace or reverse.
Red Flags:
Promises of "guaranteed" high returns with little or no risk.
Pressure to invest immediately or risk losing the opportunity.
Requests for payment via cryptocurrency or wire transfer.
A lack of official documentation or a registered business name.
Special alert: GIC scams
We are aware of fraudsters impersonating financial representatives to promote fake Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs). Please be aware that PC Financial® does not sell or promote GICs. If you get one of these offers with our name on it, it’s a scam.
Your 3-Step defense plan: Stop. Verify. Protect.
If you ever feel unsure, this simple framework is a powerful tool to put you back in control.
Stop. Take a breath. Scammers rely on a rushed, emotional reaction. If a call, text, or email feels suspicious or makes you feel panicked, disengage immediately. Hang up the phone. Do not click any links or reply. No legitimate company will ever penalize you for being cautious. A real issue can wait five minutes while you check it safely. You are in control.
Verify. If you are concerned there may be a genuine issue, contact us directly through official channels only. Use the phone number on the back of your bank card or find our contact information on the official PC Financial® website. Never use contact information provided by a suspicious caller or message.
Protect. Your financial details are private. Treat your passwords, PINs, and one-time verification codes as you would treat your house keys – for your use alone. Make it a habit to review account transactions and consider setting up alerts to help you spot fraud quickly.

Security is a partnership
Keeping your account safe is a team effort. Here’s a look at what we do on our end, and the key things for you to know on yours.
Our part: Your 24/7 digital guardian
We use industry-leading technology to protect your information around the clock.
Encryption: Think of this as a digital armoured truck. Your data is protected with bank-grade 256-bit encryption as it travels between your computer and our servers.
Secure Authentication: We use security protocols to verify that you are connected to our genuine servers, not a fake one.
Multi-Factor Authentication: By sending a code to your phone or email, we create a strong secondary barrier to prevent unauthorized access.
Fraud Detection: We use best-in-class fraud monitoring tools from the moment you apply, and our dedicated team of specialists is always ready to help.
Your part: Knowing the rules of the road
Knowing what a real PC Financial® representative will never do is like your superpower. Think of yourself as the gatekeeper to your account, no one gets access without you giving the final say.
We will always respect these boundaries and will not contact you unexpectedly to ask for:
Your full online banking password, account PIN, or your credit card's 3-digit security code (CVV).
You to read back a One-Time Verification Code. This code is for your use only, to complete an action yourself – never to be read back to an agent.
You to transfer funds to an external account for "safekeeping."
You to click a link in an email or text message to log in and "verify" your account. Always type our website address directly into your browser.

What to do if you suspect fraud
If you ever suspect you've shared your information or fallen for a scam, act quickly.
Call us immediately: Use the number on the back of your card. Our fraud department is available 24/7 to help secure your account.
Change your credentials: Log in securely and change your password and PIN.
Report it: File a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. This helps protect others in our community.
Remember, acting quickly is the most effective way to limit any potential impact and secure your account.
At PC Financial®, we handle the heavy lifting behind the scenes so you can focus on the rewarding parts of your experience. By pairing our security with your awareness, you’re not just protecting your account – you’re preserving the simple, valuable banking you deserve.
