What is chip and PIN?

Chip and PIN is a state-of-the-art technology that provides your card with even greater security and protection.

The embedded microchip on the card is encrypted and its complex processing capabilities make it virtually impossible to copy. Used with your unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) for authorization during transactions at chip-enabled terminals, the chip and PIN card provides you with enhanced protection since only you know your PIN.

How it Works?

If we advised you that you have a PC Financial Mastercard chip card that requires a PIN and you have set your PIN, follow these 3 simple steps to use you card:

  • Insert your card into the chip-enabled terminal and leave it there for the whole transaction.
  • Follow the prompts on the terminal screen to complete the transaction. You'll be asked to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) at this stage.
  • Remove your card when prompted and wait for your receipt. Your signature is not required at chip-enabled terminals.

Helpful Hints

  • Your chip and PIN PC Financial Mastercard must be inserted with the chip facing up.
  • Always protect your PIN and never reveal it to anyone.
  • Don't write your PIN down or store it electronically.
  • Cover the PIN pad at the chip terminal with your body and/or hands when entering your PIN code.
  • Wait for the machine to prompt you to remove your card. Failure to do so may terminate the transaction.
  • Purchases at terminals that are not yet chip-enabled will still require your signature.
  • Don't forget to take your credit card with you when you're done!

Chip and PIN cards and terminals help make an already secure transaction system even more secure by authenticating a cardholder's identity. Your PIN electronically confirms that you are the authorized user of the card since only you know your PIN to complete transactions.

Faster transactions at restaurants and other places.

At many restaurants, you will now be able to pay the bill from the convenience of your table without having to lose sight of your card or use your signature to complete transactions.

Places to use chip and PIN

Most merchants already have the infrastructure in place to accommodate the chip and PIN PC Financial Mastercard, where you will be asked to enter your PIN at chip-enabled terminals to complete transactions. However, if you should encounter a merchant that is not currently using chip and PIN technology, the transaction can be conducted by swiping the card using the magnetic stripe on the back. In these cases you will be required to sign to confirm transactions.

You can use a chip and PIN credit card anywhere you would use a regular credit card.

Online and Telephone Shopping

Transactions made online or over the phone with your chip and PIN PC Financial Mastercard are conducted the same way as with your current card. This may include using the three-digit verification code found on the back of your card. Never disclose your PIN to anyone, including by this method.
